Chicago has specific permitting requirements for temporary tents based on size, location, and whether your event is on public or private land. The Chicago Department of Buildings (DOB) and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) jointly oversee tent permits.
When Do You Need a Tent Permit in Chicago?
A tent covering 400 square feet or less with no point higher than 15 feet does not require a building permit from the City of Chicago. However, the structure must still meet all Chicago Construction Code requirements, including fire-resistance standards.
Any tent exceeding 400 square feet requires a building permit from the Chicago Department of Buildings. If your event includes tents larger than 400 square feet or stages taller than 2 feet, you must also complete a Special Event Permit Application through DCASE.
Permit Fees and Processing
For tent installations exceeding 2,500 total square feet, the minimum permit fee is $377, calculated as $75 plus $0.115 per square foot. Smaller permitted tents have lower fees. Applications for larger tents require drawings prepared by an Illinois-licensed architect or structural engineer.
The permit application can be submitted through the Standard Plan Review (SPR) process or the Self-Certification Permit Program. Processing times vary — plan for at least 2–4 weeks before your event date.
| Tent Size | Permit Required? |
|---|---|
| Under 400 sq ft (≤15 ft tall) | No building permit required |
| Over 400 sq ft | Building permit required (DOB) |
| Over 400 sq ft + public event | Building permit + Special Event Permit (DCASE) |
| Over 2,500 sq ft total | Minimum $377 fee + architect/engineer drawings |
Fire Safety Requirements
All tent fabrics used in Chicago must be certified fire-resistant per NFPA 701 standards. If the fabric was rendered fire-resistant during manufacturing, the certification must be dated no earlier than 7 years before your event. The certificate must specify the fabric type and compliance method.
The Chicago Fire Department may inspect tent installations before your event, particularly for events on public property or large commercial events. Fire extinguishers and clear exit pathways are required for all enclosed tents.
Chicago Park District Events
Events held on Chicago Park District property require a separate park permit. The Park District has its own Special Event Permit Application with additional fees and insurance requirements. Most park events require a minimum $1,000,000 general liability insurance policy naming the Chicago Park District as an additional insured.
